Your next drink could very well help you land a job

Post by DMS »

With unemployment on the rise, it's not surprising that happy hours have transformed into griping sessions among laid-off colleagues.

They're similar to what Beryl Smith, president of BCS Staffing, refers to as the original pink-slip party. It’s like a job fair and speed dating rolled into one.

Edwin Duterte, the man behind Pink Slip Mixers, agrees with Smith that sending blind resumes doesn’t work. He’s trying something new: incorporating social networking into his events. Not only does he ask people to post their LinkedIn URL when they RSVP for an event on pinkslipmixers.com, he also encourages attendees to exchange their Twitter info so they can keep in touch. The events are as much about creating a support system as they are about finding work. Duterte says, “The goal of the organization is to pay it forward, whereby each member—both job seekers and recruiters—form a community and help each other find a job.”
