2014 Friends of Lake Cumberland Cleanup
Once again the volunteers for the 25th Annual Friends of Lake Cumberland Shoreline Cleanup did an outstanding job of cleaning trash from the shores of beautiful Lake Cumberland.
Since 1990 the number of bags of trash that have been collected is 93,880, the number of tires that have been collected is 18,536, and the number of volunteers involved in this event is 12,051!
This year for the entire lake region the total number of bags of trash collected was 1,156, the total number of tires collected was 268, and total number of volunteers was 386.
At the West end of the lake the number of bags of trash collected was 367, the number of tires collected was 182, and the number of volunteers was 137.
Many thanks go to all of the businesses who either gave monetary donations or donated items for the Appreciation picnic on the West end of Lake Cumberland. A list of these businesses is as follows:

Special thanks go out to the Lake Cumberland State Resort Park employees who purchase, set up, cook, and clean up at the appreciation picnic! The park also generously donates two gift certificates for a two night stay at the park for both appreciation picnics.
Also, Grider Hill, Jamestown Resort and Marina and State Dock donate pontoon boats that are used to go out on the lake in search of tires and trash. Without the use of these boats the volunteers would not be able to do what they do. Thank you marina’s for your generous donation of pontoons with full tanks of gas!

The volunteer groups who helped at the West end of the lake include:
The Danny Brown Family* – 1st place large group – bags of trash collected (158)
*Whenever this family wins a prize they always donate that amount back to the Friends of Lake Cumberland. 
The Russell Co. Drug Court group – 2nd place large group – bags of trash collected (69)
The Russell Co. N. J. R. O. T. C. - 3rd place large group – bags of trash collected (63)
The Clinton Co. N. J. R. O. T. C. – 4th place large group – bags of trash collected (38) and prize for the most unusual item: a rusty cassette player
Team Casey – 1st place small group – bags of trash collected (13)
Newton Family – 2nd place small group – bags of trash collected (12)
Foothills Academy – Most Tires collected – 105
The Riggs Family – Ben & Cathy

The volunteers I would also like to recognize who helped at registration and the launch ramp include Barb and Bruce Harford (who also scoured Russell County for the donations from our local businesses – Thank you!), Jackie and Paul Berning (State Dock slip customers), Roger and Judy Dean, Barbara Henderson and last but not least…my husband Dave Eddingfield, who is always trying to recruit someone new to take over the reins and spearhead this event on the West end of the lake. If anyone is interested in taking over this event on the West end of the lake (I’ve been doing this since 2005) please let me know. I can be contacted at the State Dock – 270-343-2525.

Thanks again to everyone involved in yet another successful Friends of Lake Cumberland Shoreline Cleanup! It is amazing that this was our 25th year for this event and we still have dedicated, eager, happy participants that want to help keep the shores of Lake Cumberland clean and pristine.

Sincerely,

Debbie Schumann, Friends of Lake Cumberland Volunteer

p.s. And Mother Nature didn't disappoint us this year. Saturday was a beautiful day to be out on the lake, even if it was to pick up tires and trash. :)
