From the picture it looks like the building has been shored up with 2X8.

However for shoring to be effective it has to be erected in the same place on every floor.

That is a Cectopia Moth. Very common in the Eastern USA. I think it is a part of a giant type moths family like also the Luna Moth which I think is the tobacco moth Hillman is talking about.

I think it is a combination of wind and freezing. A lot of movement involved with the freeze and thaw cycle. Not to mention wet and dry cycles. look what it can do to peoples concrete foundations.
